The safety of medications used during pregnancy and lactation is an important issue and area of research particularly in the context of the potential risks associated with maternal and infant exposure. The aim of this part of the book is to review the safety during pregnancy and lactation of certain prescription drugs that do not belong to drug classes such as antidepressants, antipsychotics, benzodiazepines, and mood stabilizers, in light of the current literature. Although some agents such as buprenorphine, methadone, and methylphenidate have been relatively well studied, more research is needed to reach a definitive conclusion about the safety of other drugs such as buspirone, gabapentinoids, naltrexone, baclofen, acamprosate, disulfiram, biperiden, and pramipexole. Individual risk-benefit analyses should always be considered when making treatment decisions during pregnancy and lactation. In addition, robust clinical and pharmacological studies are needed to formulate treatment decisions and guidelines in this vulnerable population.
