It cannot be denied that in recent years, society has experienced a significant number of technological advancements. These advancements have generally facilitated communication (social networks, messaging applications) and the collection, transmission, analysis, and storage of information. This has benefited the average user in performing everyday activities but has also increased the danger of cyber-crimes: theft of private data, passwords, personal accounts, etc. In light of this, the application of cryptology and cryptographic systems becomes highly important, as it is what allows us to protect ourselves against these cyber-crimes. This chapter collects and summarizes the principles, most important technological tools, and main applications of cryptology in the current information society. In this way, the goal is to provide a complete overview of this important topic, highlighting the importance of this science and increasing the awareness against cyber-crimes.
