Benchmarking is a tool that has recently been implemented in healthcare evaluation. It helps identify the best achievable results and highlights potential differences among the compared data. By promoting continuous comparison, benchmarking strives for excellence, encourages collaboration among centers, and optimizes healthcare costs. This is especially useful in complex surgical procedures, such as pancreatoduodenectomy, performed on low-risk patients in high-volume centers. This chapter analyzes two major international multicenter studies that have established benchmark outcomes for open pancreatoduodenectomy (PD). It provides insights into the practical application of these benchmark values to evaluate and compare the open surgical approach with innovative minimally invasive techniques. By assessing these outcomes, this tool allows to highlight the differences in surgical performance, patient recovery, and overall success rates between traditional open methods and modern minimally invasive approaches. Additionally, it discusses how these benchmarks can be used to guide clinical decision-making and improve patient care in pancreatoduodenectomy.
