3D Virtual Surgical Planning in Pancreatic Cancer Surgery

Pancreatic cancer surgery often presents significant challenges, particularly due to the high incidence of vascular involvement, which complicates achieving clear resection margins. Recognizing vascular and other extensive local involvement preoperatively is essential to avoid unnecessary surgeries, understand the complexity and risks of the procedure, and ensure optimal outcomes from the planned surgical approach. In recent years, the integration of medical image fusion and three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction models has gained popularity in general surgery, notably within hepatic procedures. In pancreatic surgery, 3D reconstruction offers potential advantages for preoperative staging compared to conventional imaging techniques. This approach enables surgeons to create patient-specific strategies, use the 3D model for surgical simulations, and apply it for intraoperative guidance.
