One of the key documents in the History of Thermodynamics is a chapter in Herman Boerhaave’s[aut]Boerhaave, Herman (1668-1738) Elementa Chemiae (1732): “The History of Fire.” It is the first section of the discussion of the “Instruments of Chemistry.” A thorough discussion of this entire document is presented in Chapter 3. Boerhaave concludes that: “Heat(fire) consists of corporeal bodies.” They are very small, heavy, hard, and move very fast. Both the assertions and the arguments are discussed. While Boerhaave was not “correct” in his conclusions, he featured actual experiments, cogent analysis, and coherent conclusions.
