Chapter Seven offers a comparative reading of two novels, Stephen Markley’s The Deluge (2023) and Kim Stanley Robinson’s Ministry for the Future (2020), I describe as transitional utopias. Transitional utopias of the twenty-first century narrate the beginnings of a transition towards a different kind of system located in the near future. I argue that the precondition of utopian writing today is, paradoxically, financial hegemony. Finance represents and is representative of the economy, and as such is understood as a cause of and reflection on historical change. Because of this, its critical negation folds back into the representability of social totality and historical difference. The transitional utopian form is enabled by finance’s representational hegemony, which it critically refunctions and negates in the description of transition.
