Chapter four is about how volatility is recomposed in form, setting, and representation by the globalisation and financialisation of oil. It focuses on the derivative, a financial contract used to trade expectations about the future price of oil. Oil derivatives, otherwise called energy futures, are a critical site for the mediation of crude oil into economic and cultural form. To pursue this line of argument—an infrastructural critique of volatility—this chapter will follow the money from reserve to data centre, from pipeline to pricing formula. Reading this new form of time through visual media, I assess how financial media configures oil’s knowability through visual and numeric representation.

摘要
