One of our major tasks as therapists is to help children to copecoping with stressstress. We can tell storiesstories that offer hopehope and solutions. We can teach relaxation skills and support children to release their feelingsfeelings. We can encourage mindful movements and playplay. Sometimes I talk about what stress and coping are: “Stress is the feeling you get when something seems difficult or overwhelming. It’s when your body is getting ready to respond to something challenging. You might feel tense or shaky. Coping is all of the things you can do to deal with feelings of stress. There are lots of different things you can do to deal with feelings of stress. Some things are helpful, and some things are less helpful.” In this description I introduce a few key ideas: stress lives in our bodies; there are many different ways of coping with stress; and different ways of coping can be more or less effective.
