I begin my first class with my students by asking them the following questions: Why do you want to become a child therapist? Why children? Which life events or circumstances influenced your decision to become a therapist? What are you looking forward to most? What are your fears about becoming a therapist? What are your main strengths? Which strengths will support you in your goal of becoming an effective therapist? What is most important to you? What are your key values? Which values will serve you well as a therapist? Which values might get in the way? Of course, my aim in asking these questions is to help my students to develop a greater sense of self-awareness.
