This chapter critically examines the philosophy of artificial intelligence through reflection on popular discourse on the subject, proposing that popular talk about artificial intelligence serves as a kind of informal philosophy. In the course of offering a wide ranging of suggestions about how not to talk about artificial intelligence, it touches upon questions of business and technology criticism, semiotics, and third ways through optimism–pessimism debates.
