This chapter investigates the interest of the philosopher Charles Peirce (1839–1914) in machine intelligence in the decades around 1900. Not only was Peirce the first to propose a computer built from electrical circuits, he also investigated the limits of computer intelligence vis-a-vis animal intelligence and human intelligence—based on his notion that reasoning requires the ability of self-control.
