United Nations has provided a global blueprint for achievement of a better and more sustainable future in the Year 2015 comprised of pressing areas of global concern categorised into seventeen Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Among them the 3rd SDG health and wellbeing is designed to promote healthy lives and wellbeing for everyone regardless of age. This goal embraces nine health and wellness related targets, which aims at reduction in maternity and child mortality, getting rid of infectious and non-infectious diseases, prevention of and treatment of substance abuse, reducing the deaths and injuries worldwide due to road accidents, bringing in global health coverage, provision of global access to reproductive health care services and strengthening the capacity for global health security. For achieving this ambitious goal innovative approaches are needed which can address the health challenges, reduce disparities and can foster equitable access to the healthcare information and resources globally. Open Access (OA) plays the pivotal role in realising SDG 3 by democratising knowledge, enabling the dissemination of critical health research, and easing global collaboration. This chapter explores the transformative potential of open access in advancing health and wellbeing by an in-depth analysis of the contribution of OA compared to subscription-based research in advancing SDG 3. Utilizing bibliometric data sourced from the Scopus database (2000–2024), it examines year-wise and country-wise publication trends, revealing a marked acceleration in OA publications, particularly post-2018. The chapter also examines the challenges in using open access for SDG 3 and underscores the strategies to maximise open access impact to address the multifaceted dimensions of SDG 3.

摘要
