The Hellespont and Its Vicinity in the Byzantine Period as the Findspots of the Coins
摘要
Of the 1240 Byzantine coins we have evaluated, 596 are hoard finds. Hoard shows an accumulation rather than the circulation of money in the region. It is a saving for difficult times. The remaining 644 coins, excluding the hoard coins, are important for the history of the settlements in the Hellespont, which have an important location but limited Byzantine archaeological data. For this reason, instead of introducing the coins with only catalog information, which is common for numismatic studies, we have evaluated the coins together with the Byzantine settlements in the second part of our study. Thus, the contribution of the coins to the history of the settlements is included.
