ManyAtmosphere(*) natural optical phenomena can be observed in the atmosphere. In the following we will first discuss the composition of the atmosphere and its main characterizing parameters. Then, an overview of the fundamental interactions processes of light with the constituents of the atmosphere is given. This leads to a general classification of atmospheric optical phenomena. Selected phenomena will be treated in detail in subsequent chapters. Many aspects of this chapter belong to the field of meteorology.
