Scapular winging due to nerve damage is fairly uncommon, and establishing the underlying cause can be difficult. Scapular winging may occur due to weakness or paralysis of serratus anterior, the trapezius, or the rhomboids. This chapter outlines a simplified process to identify the type of scapular winging. Common tests used to highlight winging in each of the three types of palsy are shown.
