Blockchain-Based Finance for Advancing Astronomy and Astrophysics

This research explores the potential of blockchain technology and decentralized finance (DEFI) in advancing Astronomy and Astrophysics. By leveraging open blockchain protocols, the study aims to build a robust financial framework that incentivizes development and addresses funding challenges. The research proposes governance strategies, including smart contracts and community-driven platforms, to store, protect, and enhance value in the field. Collaboration within the “Open Source” Astronomy community, along with the involvement of public universities and astronomical institutions, is crucial. The integration of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) is suggested to fund and commemorate significant milestones and events in the field. This study investigates how blockchain-based finance can serve as a catalyst for innovation and foster collaboration in Astronomy and Astrophysics. The findings contribute to the discussion on utilizing blockchain technology to strengthen financial models and drive progress in scientific research and education. This paper proposes the adoption of public blockchain ledger technology as a value optimization (and complimentary) base layer for the Open development of Astronomy. A comprehensive review paper of blockchain technology with primitives can be found in [10] and references therein. In our Straw Man Proposal Study, although the purpose is for the open Astronomy development, other STEM communities may also consider it of interest since Open Source protocols are burgeoning and synergies and parallels already exist [See HapMap project and its Open Source dependence for the human Genome Project, [6] to prevent closed patenting licensing].
