The proportion of women in the paid workforce best indicates the economic and social development of a country. Indian women, than ever before are better educated and have access to improved healthcare and sanitation facilities. In spite of these advancements, they continue to fade away form paid employment. This study is an attempt to explore the current status of women in the Indian workforce. The reasons behind the low presence of women in the workforce is examined. The initiatives taken by the Government of India to encourage labour force participation of women is detailed. Further, the alternatives for improving the socio-economic status of women are also discussed.
