Encouraging Local Community Participation in Sustainability Projects
摘要
The current research explores strategies to enhance community participation in sustainability initiatives, with a focus on Indiana County, Pennsylvania. It highlights the evolving concept of social sustainability, emphasizing community roles in defining and implementing sustainability standards. The analysis reveals active local participation in defining sustainability but identifies gaps in governmental support for implementation. Equity, trust, and empowerment are presented as critical, interrelated measures to foster public engagement. While efforts like promoting green jobs and inclusivity have been made, challenges such as economic disparities and a strong reliance on fossil fuels persist. Recommendations include fostering dialogue, improving resource distribution, and empowering residents through education and collective action to address systemic issues and ensure sustainable development aligns with community-wide interests.
