Mitigating the Effect of Household Electronic Waste on the Environment
摘要
Electronic waste (e-waste) stands as one of the most urgent challenges facing the world in the twenty-first century. It is considered a rapidly increasing category of solid waste. Forecasts indicate that e-waste could escalate to 74 million tonnes by the year 2030. A major concern related to e-waste is its toxicity and the speed at which it is growing. It contains nearly 1000 different hazardous substances that can adversely affect both the environment and human health. This study seeks to assess consumers’ knowledge about purchasing green household products to mitigate electronic waste’s effect. Literature has demonstrated that green products are friendly to the environment. The study is motivated by the lack of awareness about the dangers of “Household E-waste” to the environment and health when improperly disposed of. The study aims to determine consumer awareness of the benefits of green household products. The findings suggest that most of the participants lack knowledge about the friendliness of green consumer products in the environment. Product name, social pressures and price were also found to be the determining factors when purchasing household products. The study suggests that consumers should be educated about the benefits of purchasing green household products.
