Effect of Thermal Post-Treatment on the Properties of Densified Ceiba pentranda Wood

Kapok wood (Ceiba pentandra) is a tropical hardwood species characterized by low density, ease of machinability, and low natural durability. It is primarily utilized in aeromodelling due to its exceptionally high strength-to-weight ratio. However, since this wood species is readily available in the market, it is important to promote its use for alternative applications. In this context, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of a thermal post-treatment on the properties of previously densified kapok wood. The densification treatment (DT) was performed using a hydraulic press at controlled temperature and pressure. A total of forty boards (ρ = 0.34 g/cm3) measuring 400 mm x 200 mm x 35 mm (l x w x t) were densified at 180 °C according to four schedules: two duration times (5 and 10 min) and two pressures (1.07 MPa and 2.15 MPa). Subsequently, half of the boards underwent a thermal post-treatment (PT) for 25 min at 180 °C under a pressure sufficient only to ensure contact with the heated plates of the hydraulic press. It was found that all mechanical properties were significantly improved compared to the undensified material. The thermal post-treatment was effective in yielding further enhancements in mechanical properties, with the exception of the modulus of elasticity, which was negatively affected. It can be concluded that the densification processes significantly improved all mechanical properties; however. Dimensional stability did not show similar improvement. The proposed thermal post-treatment resulted in additional enhancement of the mechanical properties, while it was ineffective in reducing the dimensional stability of the densified boards.
