In this work, European hornbeam wood (Carpinus betulus L.) was industrially acetylated in order to improve its properties and widen its usage. Chemical analysis was carried out to determine the chemical components, pH, buffering capacity, and content of organic extractives. These findings were evaluated by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). After acetylation, changes in microscopic structure were examined by bright-field microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Since 2016, acetylated hornbeam has been exposed to soil along with hornbeam, beech and pine sapwood control stakes. To evaluate its product-related properties, contact angle, surface energy, shear strength, bonding strength, and color stability against UV light with or without coating was tested as well. Finally, according to the results, use classes, product groups, market share of acetylated hornbeam were determined, supplemented by SWOT analysis and related literature, in order to give a full picture of it as a product.

摘要
