In this chapter, Megan Lupton facilitates an open discussion with true crime podcast host and social media influencer, Dr. MaryAnne McCullough. Their discussion explores the unethical behaviour of some true crime practitioners on social media, including the harm caused to victims/survivors and criminal cases. Further, the solutions-focused approach proposes ways for true crime practitioners to support victims instead of exploiting them, by providing informal justice and raising awareness for unsolved cases. McCullough offers unique primary insight into the role and responsibility of a true crime influencer. As a retired criminologist, McCullough discusses the potential risks to active criminal investigations and court trials posed by true crime content, as well as how she believes practitioners can discuss crimes without impeding criminal cases. In facilitating the open discussion, Lupton explores existing research into the ethics of true crime and real-world examples of the ethical and unethical sides of true crime reporting.
