From Cotton Fields to Classrooms: Enduring Legacies of Strong Black Women Shaping My Journey in Science Education
摘要
It is often said that there is no place like home. And while this may be true in many regards, those seeking to join the professoriate often find themselves searching for academic homes that fulfill their intellectual, professional, and personal needs. Some in science education find their academic home for life early in their careers. Others require more time as needs, situations, and circumstances evolve. Regardless of which path is taken, our path is our story, and our story is our journey—we follow wherever it leads. In this chapter, I uplift the courage and strength of Black women–grandmothers, mothers, sisters, aunties, and sister-friends who helped chart the course and inspired my journey into science education. The power and boldness of these women are unmistakable as they have deeply cared for, bravely nurtured, and, at times, boldly carried me on my journey. I am humbled by their wisdom. I am grateful for their sacrifices and forever mindful that this journey is not mine alone.
