Music and sound have played an integral role in helping humans shape, understand and express their identity for millennia. Musical identity is not only linked to wellbeing but also helps us understand and enact our relationships with ourselves and those around us. As contemporary music technology evolves, it continues to offer new and important affordances for young people to connect with each other and their sense of self. Drawing on the author’s research, as well as current theory and practice in fields such as of music therapy and psychology, this chapter presents practical examples of how contemporary music technology can support positive identity development and wellbeing in children and adolescents. By leveraging the potential of sampling, MIDI-controllers and digital audio workstations, these examples demonstrate how music technology can support connection to culture, family, and peer groups, while enabling youth to process difficult emotions, and experience themselves as competent music makers. To support facilitators interested in using these music technologies, the chapter ends with several recommendations. These recommendations aim to help practitioners leverage the unique features of contemporary music production and performance equipment to support young people’s positive identity development and general wellbeing.

摘要
