The focus of this chapter is on the 2000 elections, possibly the most polarised elections of the Metapolitefsi period and certainly the one with the narrowest outcome. This closely contested electoral battle was decided by a margin of 72,400 votes. As newspapers of that time wrote, Greece went to sleep with a New Democracy government and woke up with PASOK in power. The chapter covers the preceding 1999 European elections where New Democracy won with 36% compared to PASOK’s 32.9%, the stock market issues, the Parnitha earthquake in September 1999, the Helsinki Agreement in December 1999, and the election of Stephanopoulos in February 2000, and how all these events ultimately influenced the election outcome.
