In this chapter, we discuss a particularly intense political period marked by great political tension that defines the Metapolitefsi era. This ten-month period of instability and confusion is described vividly by Prof. Voulgaris. The June 1989 elections were dominated by the Koskotas scandal. It covers the Tzannis Tzannetakis government, the assassination of Pavlos Bakoyannis, and the ecumenical government of Zolotas, supported by all three major factions. The chapter also explores the Coalition of the Left and its role, its founding, expectations, and ultimate evaluation. Was it a “Dirty ‘89” or a cleansing period? What remains from this era? Prof. Voulgaris analyses the last elections of the Metapolitefsi Greece and the first of the globalised Greece, as he aptly describes.
