Air Pollution and Mental Health
摘要
The air we breathe is essential for life, yet it also poses a major threat to human health. Just like the negative implications for physical health, there is an increasing understanding that air pollution can lead to the development or exacerbation of poor mental health and well-being. This chapter looks to summarise evidence on the links between air pollution and mental health, spanning research that examines increased odds and severity of mental health disorders (e.g., depression), increased emergency department visits, reduced subjective well-being and quality of life, as well as increased risk of psychotic experiences and suicidal ideation. Broader risk factors will also be identified, with particular attention given to community and public health interventions that may reduce air pollution and, importantly, protect mental health.
