The purpose of this project is to better understand the meaning of climate change for disabled women and gender minorities living in North America. Using hermeneutic phenomenology and arts-informed research methods, this project explores the meaning of climate change and personal identity through the analysis of poetry. Three poets were selected who identify as disabled women or gender minorities and residents of North America. Van Manen’s six human science research activities for hermeneutic phenomenology were engaged to analyze the poetry, which identified four themes, including loss, connection, hope, and resistance. Drawing from the theoretical frameworks of Feminist Disability Studies and Cripistemologies, the poems and themes identified within were explored in relation to broader narratives around disability, gender, and climate change.
