In this chapter, we consider the topic of environmentalism from a perspective of decolonial theory. Although perspectives vary, decolonial theory emphasizes two important points. The first point concerns a difference between colonialism—the active invasion, settlement, and subjugation of one people and land by another, and coloniality—the modes of thought and ways of being integral to colonial violence. Whereas colonialism occurs within a concrete historical period, coloniality persists in cultural psychological forms long after the end of formal colonial rule. The second important point concerns coloniality as the inherent dark side to modernity, an insight that theorists reinforce with the linked concept of modernity/coloniality. What insights does a decolonial perspective illuminate for the topic of environmentalism? In this chapter, we discuss the relevance of a decolonial perspective to the topic of environmentalism and present insights from three related areas of our research: wilderness preservation in parks, conceptions of environmentalism, and political ideology and environmentalism. We end by noting a few implications of our discussion for community psychology.
