Challenges of Energy Management for Buildings in Uganda: A Literature Review

The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview of challenges of energy management for buildings in Uganda. A scoping review methodology was used to gather relevant information from the accessible literature sources. The study identified: hydropower dependency, limited electricity access, and high energy demand due to rapid population growth as the main energy challenges the country and building owners are facing in Uganda. Additionally, while acknowledging that Uganda is putting considerable effort to support various standards for sustainable energy use, the results of the study reveal that challenges continue to persist due to insufficient technical expertise, high upfront costs, and a general lack of awareness among stakeholders on energy use and management. To solve these building energy related challenges, the study assessed policies, strategies, technologies, and barriers to energy efficiency in buildings and noted that the country needed an integrated approach to sustainable energy management. Passive design principles, including optimal orientation, natural ventilation, and thermal insulation were identified in the study as some of the interventions that can be implemented to reduce energy use in buildings. The study also noted that recent advancements in the incorporation of renewable energy, especially solar photovoltaics, assisted building owners to reduce reliance on non-renewable sources. To conclude the study noted that overcoming financial, technical, and policy barriers would support the country reduce challenges of energy for buildings in Uganda. The study also noted that improving energy regulations, promoting energy-efficient technologies, training professionals in energy management, and increasing public awareness in energy management can also contribute to a more sustainable energy use in the built environment in Uganda.
