This chapter examines hidden barriers to learning stemming from the disconnect between home life, societal factors, and school expectations. It begins by exploring how family income influences language development and how home environments shape social-emotional stability, both of which are essential for cognitive growth. The chapter highlights the gap between students’ realities and teachers’ perceptions, especially for children living in poverty. It underscores the need to recognize poverty-related behavioral communication and encourages teachers to act as guides who help disrupt cycles of disadvantage. Modern dietary issues—including poor nutrition, lack of fresh food, and unhealthy school lunches—are shown to affect students’ energy, attention, and academic performance, prompting a call to action for promoting healthier habits. Finally, it explores how media overexposure and sleep deprivation compromise children’s development and school readiness, reinforcing the need for holistic, responsive educational practices.
