Influence of Industry 4.0 Technologies on Sustainable Manufacturing Development

Today, manufacturing processes are undergoing a revolution, evolving successively from traditional linear manufacturing with a high proportion of manual work toward digital and intelligent solutions. The motivation for this is primarily to increase competitiveness. This chapter addresses the impact of selected Industry 4.0 technologies on achieving sustainable manufacturing goals, which are seen as part of competitiveness and return on investment. Digitization of production leads to a radical reformatting of the implementation of manufacturing processes and their management methods. Therefore, when implementing such far-reaching changes, it is necessary to consider environmental and social aspects in addition to economic ones. Of all the new technologies that make up the Industry 4.0 revolution, the following have been focused on: additive manufacturing, cyber-physical systems, autonomous mobile robots, industrial internet of things and big data analytics due to their strong connection with the manufacturing of objects in the physical sense. Each of the above technologies is discussed based on the most recent publications. Their relevance in the context of the three pillars of sustainable manufacturing indicated, and reference made to the challenges accompanying their implementation. Thus, the article fits in with the need for researchers and practitioners to develop an understanding of the impact of technologies aimed at digitizing manufacturing on the achievement of sustainable development goals.
