With increasing global warming recently and, parallel to it, health-threatening challenges such as pandemics, cities as population centers have become hot spots to deal with these two challenges. There is a clear need to address climate change and health challenges simultaneously, through consistent policies and approaches. In this context, the Salutogenic approach emphasizes prioritizing human health needs while promoting sustainable environmental design. Salutogenic design focuses on creating environments that promote health and well-being rather than merely preventing illness. Antonovsky’s salutogenesis theory, which emphasizes the factors that support human health and well-being, serves as the foundation for this concept. However, except for a limited number of articles, the development of the Salutogenic approach has always been on an architectural scale, and there is a need to develop it further on an urban scale. Therefore, the current study uses a systematic review of the literature on the Salutogenic design to critically examine the relationship between this approach and urbanism. Additionally, it seeks to analyze the gaps and potential of this approach for urbanism. Key findings reveal a notable increase in publications on Salutogenic urbanism from 2019–2020 to 2023, most likely due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The study points out significant trends: mental health as a primary concern, a change in research emphasis from rural to urban, and omissions in addressing physical health and environmental change. A co-occurrence analysis clearly highlights connections between urban planning, public health, and well-being. The study proposes a framework for Salutogenic urbanism based on three components: comprehensible (e.g., green spaces, walkability), manageable (e.g., noise reduction, air quality), and meaningful (e.g., social cohesion, biodiversity). Results clarify that using solutions including waste management systems, energy-efficient designs, active transportation networks, and smart city technologies enables Salutogenic urbanism to solve health and environmental issues as well. These results provide direction in creating and developing sustainable healthy cities consistent with the Sustainable Development Goals.
