This exploratory chapter relies on the analysis of administrative data (in a national dataset of fatal and sub-lethal shootings of civilians in Jamaica by members of security forces), qualitative content analysis of archived newspaper reports, census and homicide data and official reports of fatal police shootings of civilians for a discussion of police and soldiers’ involvement in fatal shootings of civilians between 2017 and 2022. The chapter's descriptive analysis reveals characteristics of fatal shooting incidents involving on-duty police and soldiers and civilians such as predominantly male civilian victims, a larger percentage of incidents attributed to police officers and very little change in the trend for civilians killed compared to on-duty police officers.

摘要
