This text deals with the theme of the future in relation to fantasy, desire and hope. In order to examine the latter aspect, I examine two Heraclitan fragments: Fragment B18 “If you do not expect the unexpectable, you will not find it; for it is hard to be sought out and difficult” (Diels and Kranz, Die Fragmente der Vorsokratiker. Wedimann, Berlin, 1954) and B32 “The wise is one only. It is unwilling and willing to be called by the name of Zeus” (Diels and Kranz, cit.). In the first quote, hope has a goal that seems unattainable from a human perspective; moreover, it must be “hoped” against all reason. Hope is recognized as an instrument that allows one to go beyond all purely human ways in order to reach transcendence, the guarantee of a future that will always remain open. My aim is to emphasize the meaning of hope in a phenomenological perspective and, related to this, the role that imagination and desire play with regard to a sustainable future.
