Coding backend systems and observing AI’s task efficiency it is possible to quickly identify AI as a powerful tool for aiding articulation and for overcoming writer’s block. It is, nevertheless, not an autonomous creative force and, likewise, it is capable of understanding emotion or timing or exhibiting empathy. Rather, it can be a ‘thought stater’, a generator of playful reinterpretations of classic stories, enabling interactive, personalized narratives. The danger might be in creating derivative stories, a danger that future heightens the significance of human prompts. That said, it is with AI that there is the possibility of creating multisensory, time-dissolving books, powered by brainwave interfaces. Here science fiction meets current science, possibility builds from the interaction of human and machine. While true imagination and feelings is unlikely possible in AI, it does have the capacity to democratize creative expression, especially for non-native speakers and children. Perhaps, though, the core question is not who writes but who has the time to read in a world of infinite output. In that context, compression and curation might become as important as creativity.
