Wound Healing and Scar Formation

Wound healing is a complex, multifaceted process. It is critical to understand the different qualities of tissues involved in wound healing and to understand that scar formation is natural and impossible to prevent—in fact, in some situations, scar formation is beneficial. The goal of proper surgical technique is to optimize scar formation to the desires of the surgeon and the patient. Surgery does not heal the body; it only aligns the body in a more favorable position to allow for the body to heal itself.
