Artificial Intelligence Implementation for Plagiarism Detection in Arab Scientific Publications

Plagiarism is the act of copying or rephrasing someone else’s work or ideas without proper acknowledgment. In the context of academic writing, it means using words or ideas from a source without proper citation. Detecting plagiarism is a crucial challenge in academia, as it significantly affects the quality, integrity, and accreditation of scientific research undertaken in universities and academic institutions. In response, researchers and academic centers have made extensive efforts to prevent and detect this detrimental phenomenon. The Arab scientific community faces a particular challenge with plagiarism that occurs between English and Arabic. However, advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) technology, including machine learning, natural language processing, word and sentence embedding, and the semantic web, have significantly improved methods for detecting plagiarism. This chapter will define plagiarism and explore its various types, including cross-language plagiarism. It will also examine techniques for detecting and preventing plagiarism, highlighting the different technologies that support these efforts, along with their advantages and disadvantages, particularly focusing on tools powered by AI. The chapter will also detail the research undertaken on training models and the methodologies employed. Furthermore, the state of Arab scientific publications from 1996 to 2023 will be discussed, emphasizing the importance for academic integrity and originality. The current practice for detecting plagiarism in the Arab world will be analyzed, identifying opportunities, challenges and limitations. A comprehensive overview of AI tools available for plagiarism detection among Arabic language users will also be presented. Finally, this chapter will propose a framework and recommendations for implementing a plagiarism detection system within Arabic academic publications, along with future directions aimed at enhancing detection efficiency and fostering a robust and credible academic environment that contributes to the advancement of knowledge and research in the Arab world.
