The Chinese community in Kolkata, mainly residing in the Chinatowns, has displayed notable resilience and adaptability despite socio-economic challenges over the years. This paper explores the evolution of their economic activities. This paper discusses the transition from traditional jobs like shipbuilding, carpentry, and tannery to contemporary small businesses such as eateries, restaurants and part-time work. The study highlights how different factors like historical events, socio-political relationship, and pandemic have influenced the economic landscape of this community. The aim is to highlight the community’s resilience, their adaptability, and the significant role of social interactions in sustaining their economic activities and cultural heritage. This historical analysis provides insights into the community’s ability to navigate and thrive amidst changing circumstances and showcase the enduring strength and vitality of the Chinese community in Kolkata.
