Impact Assessment of On-Site Semi-Autonomous Robots on UK Concrete Works: A Case-based Qualitative Approach

This study aims to examine the impacts of semi-autonomous robots on the concrete works segment in productivity, cost, quality, labour, and sustainability within the UK construction industry. The study adopted a case-based qualitative approach involving real-world examples of concrete distribution, levelling, and 3D printing robots. Case studies within the UK industry were critically examined to create a qualitative understanding of how semi-autonomous robots affect concrete works through document analysis. Key listed benefits include increased efficiency, improved accuracy, reduced labour costs, and better safety. The findings revealed that semi-autonomous robots save lots of time on-site, improve quality by reducing defects, and contribute positively to labour through a reduction of occupational risks. On the other side, the high initial costs and shortage of skilled operators keep on being a serious obstacle to wide diffusion. This study makes it clear that the semi-autonomous robots could promise large improvements in both efficiency and quality, but because of the high expenses involved, smaller contractors will find accessing them difficult. Consequently, it suggests that the way to surmount these challenges is through understanding the appropriate financial models, such as equipment leasing, or running a pilot to build trust and familiarity with the new technology. The contribution of this research is viewed by its application to semi-autonomous robots in the concrete works industry; the knowledge derived would serve pragmatically towards how robotics could shape the future of the building and construction sectors in general, and especially concerning the three key aspects of productivity, safety, and environmental sustainability.
