Beyond the Threads: Navigating Consumer Perceptions of Ethnic Fashion Appropriation Versus Appreciation
摘要
As globalisation and digital media accelerate cross-cultural exchange, ethnic motifs, textiles, and designs have become increasingly visible within mainstream fashion. However, the commercialisation of these elements often raises concerns around cultural sensitivity, intellectual property, and respect for cultural origins. We provide a 2x2 matrix on consumer attitudes toward ethnic fashion which allows for a nuanced examination of how consumers perceive and interact with ethnic fashion, highlighting where intentions may lead to either positive cultural exchange or unintended harm. Moreover, to effectively recover from a cultural engagement breach, individuals or companies can follow our structured 4-step framework: acknowledgment, education, engagement, and transformation to address the unique challenges associated with different types of breaches. This chapter includes real-world examples, implications for consumer perceptions, and directions for future research.
