Forests are an important natural resource of mountain areas in Montenegro, covering over 60% of the state territory. They provide protection, construction materials, firewood, food, and medicine. Collecting non-wood forest products, such as medicinal herbs, forest fruits, and mushrooms, is a source of income for the local communities and a considerable contribution to the national economy. Although the contemporary developed societies have been paying increasing attention to ecosystem services provided by forests and non-wood forest products, exploitation of forest goods here is still intensive, threatening important resources such as soil, water, and biodiversity. This paper points out the importance of Montenegrin forests and non-wood forest products, discussing also the negligence of relevant stakeholders toward these resources. Finally, it shows the results of a pilot survey conducted with citizens, teachers, and students on the issues related to forests, non-wood forest products, and forest-provided ecosystem services. Information on people’s perception, attitudes, and behavior should serve as an important input to policymaking, management of forest resources, and strengthening public awareness on the matter.

摘要
