Durmitor mountain consists of a very specific relief, which significantly influenced the creation and preservation of a unique identity of Durmitor people. In a semantic field a mythoetic origin of the word Durmitores, similar to Olympus, means the habitat of the gods, and in the field of geography it’s primarily described as the mountain rich in waters in that way emphasizing its defining landscape, natural beauties and wealth all featuring this area. In this paper we primarily want to research spatio-temporal landscape of Durmitor and Drobnjak and its role in creating the identity of this mountainous area of Montenegro. While researching this topic we encountered numerous toponyms which indicate various interferences of natural surroundings, religious beliefs, ideological and cultural influences in shaping a specific identity, characterized by a socio-cultural ethos of this area. The starting point of our research of the role that Durmitor toponyms have in locals’ “semantics of life” is the combination of sociological research, historical sources, ethnological and anthropological material and, of course, pioneering attempts by individuals to depict this specific natural and cultural landscape of Durmitor and Drobnjak.
