The Archetypal Discourse of the Mountain Rumija as a Source of Montenegrin Identity and the Significance of Its Existence Through the Character and Work of Prince Vladimir
摘要
The significance of the mountain Rumija is reflected in its geographical location, the fact that it represents the original place of the emergence of the Montenegrin statehood and spirituality, as well as its multidimensional mythical and symbolic feature. The symbolic meaning of this mountain and its historical, social, and cultural components are involved in the context of historical science, even today. The analysis of our paper is focused on the identity conception related to the precursor of Montenegrin state-building sublimated by the mountain Rumija, the personality of Prince Vladimir who ruled the first Montenegrin state, as well as the pilgrimage held every year on the mountain Rumija and dedicated to carrying the cross on which Prince Vladimir was killed. The pilgrimage to the mountain Rumija represents not only a collective memory of the ruler who ruled the first Montenegrin state and suffered a martyr’s death, but it also unites people of different religious affiliations (Orthodox, Catholic, and Muslim), which guarantees multi-confessional harmony as an important identity principle in modern Montenegro.
