Land Use Land Cover Changes on Groundwater Quality in the Weining Plain

The quality of groundwater in the Weining Plain is increasingly threatened by pollution from agricultural and industrial activities, as well as changes in land use and land cover (LULC). Understanding the relationship between LULC patterns and groundwater quality is essential for sustainable water resource management and urban planning in this region. This chapter employs a comprehensive approach to analyze the impact of LULC changes on groundwater quality in the Weining Plain. LULC data from 2000 to 2020 are analyzed to quantify changes in land use, particularly the expansion of urban and rural settlements and the reduction of agricultural land. The Curved Streamline Searchlight Model (CS-SLM) is applied to determine the influence area of LULC types around monitoring wells. Spearman correlation analysis is used to evaluate the relationship between groundwater quality indicators and LULC patterns. The findings are expected to inform sustainable land use planning and groundwater management strategies, ensuring the protection of water resources in the face of ongoing urbanization and agricultural intensification.
