Language is widely regarded as a dynamic phenomenon and, at the same time, the most important human communication tool. Therefore, as society advances, there will be an increasing need for new words. One of the ways of the word formation process is using the available and existing words. In this regard, this study was an effort to investigate the roles and productivity of color terms in Persian word formation using a corpus-driven approach. To achieve this objective, eight frequently used color terms, including [sijɑh] (black), [sefid] (white), [sorx] and [qermez] (red), [zærd] (yellow), [sæbz] (green), [bænæfʃ] (purple), and [ʔɑbi] (blue) were extracted from Hamshahri corpus using AntConc software. Following an extensive search for the specified color terms, a thorough examination of all concordance lines, and the elimination of irrelevant occurrences, the lexical categories of the remaining occurrences were specified. Subsequently, these occurrences were classified into 17 distinct domains based on their pragmatic roles. The analysis revealed that the productivities of [sijɑh] and [sefid] color terms, with frequencies of 237 and 169, respectively, were much higher than others. Moreover, the majority of words formed by these color terms were classified under noun (529 occurrences) and adjective (188 occurrences) categories, with no occurrences in verb or adverb categories. Furthermore, three word-formation processes were found to be the most significant ones; respectively: compounding, compounding and derivation, and derivation. Ultimately, it was observed that the words were predominantly used within domains related to human beings and places. The results of the present study may be valuable for Persian language teaching, lexicography, corpus building, translation studies, typing, and editing.
