Solid waste collection and transportation systems in Senegal are highly heterogeneous, varying by region, institutional structure, and infrastructural constraints. In urban centers such as Dakar, formal and informal actors collaboratively provide waste services, with SONAGED assuming full responsibility for management. While high-income neighborhoods benefit from scheduled, fee-based collections, low-income, densely populated areas rely on informal collectors using manual or animal-drawn vehicles. Communal containers supplement waste collection in markets and underserved areas, yet most regions outside Dakar suffer from fragmented services due to inadequate road infrastructure, equipment deficits, and institutional limitations. Coverage disparities are stark, with Dakar achieving 84% waste collection, compared to 36% in Rufisque and as low as 22% in secondary towns. Waste is not consistently segregated, recorded, or treated, particularly for hazardous and biomedical waste, which are often improperly disposed of. Proposed improvements emphasize a combination of door-to-door and communal bin systems adapted to local conditions, with recommendations for staggered collection schedules, better segregation, and increased human and material resources. Without significant reform and investment, Senegal’s waste management challenges, especially outside major cities, are likely to persist.
