Strategies such as improved product design, consumer education, and policy support can overcome common barriers like lack of awareness and infrastructure. In Senegal, food waste from commercial generators presents a valuable resource for animal feeding, offering a decentralized and cost-effective solution for organic waste reduction. Traditional animal feed systems, when formalized and supported through logistics, stakeholder cooperation, and regulatory backing, can significantly lower the organic fraction of municipal waste. Modeling shows a stepwise reduction in organic waste composition over time, illustrating the long-term potential of such systems. Complementary to this, household-level composting offers an accessible approach for small towns, enhancing soil quality and reducing landfill dependence. Successful implementation requires tailored composting techniques, community training, and proper segregation practices. Together, these strategies can transform organic waste management in Senegal by reducing overall waste volumes, supporting agricultural systems, and easing municipal waste burdens, while aligning with broader goals of sustainability and circular economy principles.
