Global waste generation has reached 2.24 billion tonnes in 2020 and is projected to increase by 73% to 3.88 billion tonnes by 2050. Developing countries, including Senegal, face significant challenges with approximately 90% of waste being disposed of in illegal dumpsites, leading to disease spread, greenhouse gas emissions, and environmental hazards. This document presents a comprehensive waste management strategy for Senegal to address the critical challenges in the country's solid waste management system. The main challenges identified include rapid population growth (3.0% annually) that could generate 8.9 million tonnes of waste by 2050, inadequate waste storage and collection infrastructure, absence of hazardous waste management systems, lack of decentralized treatment facilities, and uncontrolled dumpsites. The study aims to strengthen Senegal's solid waste management capacity through strategies that include recommendations for appropriate treatment technologies and facility siting, waste diversion and collection systems, transition from dumpsites to sanitary landfills, and extended approaches for sustainable waste management development. The developed strategies are designed to support sustainable solid waste management implementation and have the potential to significantly improve Senegal's overall waste management infrastructure while addressing environmental and public health concerns.
