The central aim of the second chapter is to lay out the methodological framework at a conceptual level, explaining the broad contribution of each tradition and addressing any potential tensions between them. To visualise how they come together, the metaphor of a tree is utilised, illustrating their differing yet interconnected roles. Each section deals with a component of the tree before pulling them together at the end. The first part establishes the roots of the tree, explaining how PDTPDT is used principally for the philosophicalphilosophical and theoretical foundations of the framework. The second section is concerned with the trunk of the tree, which is where CDSCDS makes its principal contribution. This part deals with how theoretical assumptions are translated into analytical strategies, and it is argued the CDS’s interest in real-world issues means that it has dedicated significant attention to this component. To complete the tree, the chapter explains the decision to place CLCL as the branches, where its main contribution is both broadening and deepening the level of analysis. Finally, it brings all components of the tree together to emphasise the interconnectedness of the approach.
